ALBAY ON ALERT: PEO GEARS UP AS TYPHOON OPONG APPROACHES

LIGAO CITY, Albay – With Typhoon Opong expected to impact the Bicol region this Friday, the Albay Provincial Engineering Office (PEO) has declared full readiness, positioning all its assets, manpower, and equipment on standby to support the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC).

Provincial Engineer Dante Baclao confirmed the PEO's preparedness in an interview today, stating, "We at the PEO are a support agency, working alongside the PDRRMC. All our assets, manpower, and equipment are on standby. We are currently awaiting instructions from the PDRRMC."

Baclao also assured the public regarding the availability of evacuation centers, noting that a recent validation process has been completed. "Our evacuation centers are ready. In fact, I recently conducted a validation of these centers," he explained. During this review, some facilities initially listed were deemed unsafe due to their susceptibility to natural hazards. "We discovered that some listed evacuation centers are unsafe because they are prone to flooding or lahar. We are avoiding these locations to ensure the safety of our constituents," Baclao clarified.

The province boasts over 80 designated evacuation centers. "Based on our list, we have more than 80 evacuation centers, which we are preparing for use. Local Government Units (LGUs) also maintain their own evacuation centers in their respective areas," Baclao added.

While schools are often utilized as temporary shelters during emergencies, their use is subject to limitations. "We can also use schools, but only for a maximum of two weeks," Baclao noted, underscoring the need for efficient and timely disaster response as Typhoon Opong approaches.
