ALBAY REP. LAGMAN PRAISES DOT'S MAYON DECISION, PUSHES FOR ENHANCE TOURISM STRATEGY

QUEZON CITY – During the House of Representatives' budget deliberation for the Department of Tourism (DOT) on September 24, Albay 1st District Representative Krisel Lagman lauded the DOT's decision to abandon the proposed artificial illumination of Mayon Volcano. She emphasized the importance of preserving natural heritage over commercial interests.

Rep. Lagman also used the opportunity to inquire about several key aspects of the country's tourism strategy:

- Sustaining Domestic Tourism Leadership: She questioned the DOT on the factors contributing to the Philippines' top ranking in domestic tourism within Southeast Asia and sought insights into strategies for maintaining this lead.
- Leveraging Domestic Tourism for Inbound Growth: Rep. Lagman explored how a robust domestic tourism sector could be utilized to attract a greater influx of international tourists.
- Advancing Medical and Wellness Tourism: She inquired about the DOT's plans for developing the country's medical and wellness tourism sector and enhancing its competitiveness within the ASEAN region.
- Boosting Branding Investments: Rep. Lagman stressed the need for increased investment in the DOT's branding campaigns to ensure the Philippines can effectively compete with regional counterparts like Thailand and Singapore.

"As I emphasized: When we love our own places, we become the best promoters of our destinations," Rep. Lagman stated.

She concluded by highlighting the broader significance of tourism, noting, "Tourism is not just about attracting visitors—it is about empowering local communities, protecting our heritage, and building a stronger Philippine identity."
