BU HATAW 2025 Marred by Smoke Bomb Incident; Students Suffer Respiratory Distress
Legazpi City – Celebrations at the Bicol University (BU) Sports Complex following the BU HATAW 2025 event turned chaotic as multiple students experienced hyperventilation and suffocation due to the use of smoke bombs during a performance.
 
Shortly after the event concluded, a number of students were rushed out of the venue, exhibiting symptoms of respiratory distress. Medical rescuers on site attended to the affected individuals, who were then moved to the ground floor of the BU Library, leading to overcrowding and heightened anxiety among the student body.
 
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the smoke bombs, intended to be used at the end of the performance, were prematurely detonated by some students. This led to a chain reaction, with others following suit and throwing the devices upward, resulting in rapid explosions and smoke filling the venue. The smoke triggered mild to severe breathing difficulties and other respiratory complications among attendees, with some students reportedly sustaining minor burns.
 
University officials have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
