Damaged Lahar Control Structure Identified as Potential Cause of Masarawag Flooding

Guinobatan, Albay – The Albay Provincial Safety and Emergency Office (APSEMO), led by OIC Roderick Mendoza, has identified a damaged lahar control structure as a potential cause of the recent flooding in Barangay Masarawag, Guinobatan. The discovery offers a promising lead for the Provincial Government of Albay in addressing the persistent flooding issues in the area.

According to APSEMO's findings, the damaged structure is part of a series of older structures built in the 1980s under the Comprehensive Disaster Preparedness Around Mayon Volcano Program. These structures were designed to hold debris during lahar flows, providing a crucial layer of protection for Barangay Masarawag. OIC Mendoza emphasized that the breached area, now believed to be the source of the current flooding, is located several kilometers away from the main Maninila-Masarawag channel.

Governor Noel Rosal expressed his optimism following the APSEMO report. In a recent social media post, he stated, "Nakita na ng mga tao natin maybe the caused of flooding sa bgy masarawag... medyo malayo na ito halos nasa 6 km danger zone na kailangan repair natin ito.. sana ito na nga" (Our people may have found the cause of the flooding in Barangay Masarawag... it's quite far, almost in the 6 km danger zone, and we need to repair it... hopefully, this is it).

The governor's statement reflects the urgency and determination of the provincial government to find a lasting solution to the flooding problem. With the potential source identified, Governor Rosal is hopeful that the necessary repairs to the damaged structure will mitigate future flooding in Barangay Masarawag.

The Provincial Government of Albay is now expected to assess the extent of the damage and develop a plan for the immediate repair and reinforcement of the lahar control structure. This action aims to restore its original function of containing debris and safeguarding the community from the devastating effects of flooding.
