Kalayaan Park in Legazpi City Faces Neglect, Sparks Safety Concerns
Legazpi City, Philippines – Kalayaan Park in Bariada, Gogon, once a well-lit and vibrant community space, is now facing neglect, raising concerns among local residents about safety and potential misuse. The park, formerly known as Emelda Park, was once a popular spot for families, students, and visitors from across Albay. However, according to residents, the park's condition has deteriorated significantly under the current administration, particularly in terms of lighting and maintenance.
A recent Facebook post from a concerned resident has brought the issue to the forefront. The resident, who recalls the park's dark past as a haven for illicit activities during their childhood, expressed joy when the park was renovated and illuminated years ago.
"When I was a child, Emelda Park was very dark, a place for couples and hidden relationships," the resident wrote. "I was so happy when it was fixed and beautified. I don't remember what year it was, but I remember it became bright and beautiful. It was very lively after the renovation, with people from Legazpi and other towns in our beloved province coming to visit."
However, the resident lamented the park's current state, noting its descent into darkness and disrepair. "Now, please look at the situation. It's pitiful. It suddenly became dark. I have no bad intentions in posting this, but I just want you to know that this is what Kalayaan Park is like at night. Maybe it can be given attention. I pity the children who are struggling to practice for their school projects."
The lack of adequate lighting has fueled worries that the park could once again become a magnet for individuals with ill intentions, jeopardizing the safety of park visitors, especially children and students who use the space for educational activities.
