Red Flag: Sunwest Quarry Operating Without Fencing Permit and ECC
Camalig, Albay – Controversy surrounds the Sunwest, Inc. quarry project located on Lot No. 7745 in Barangay Tumpa, Camalig, Albay, as official documents reveal the absence of necessary permits.
 
In a letter dated October 14, 2025, Hon. Carlos Irwin G. Baldo, Jr., Municipal Mayor of Camalig, informed Albay Governor Hon. Noel E. Rosal that a review of records with the Municipal Engineering Office (MEO) showed that Sunwest, Inc. has neither filed a Fencing Permit application nor been issued such a permit for the mentioned property.
 
Adding to the concerns, a separate letter dated October 16, 2025, from the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) V, signed by OIC Regional Director Geri-Geronimo R. Sañez, also informed Governor Rosal that after verifying their online system and official records, no Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) has been issued to Sunwest, Inc. for the fence construction project at the quarry site.
 
These revelations raise questions about the compliance of the Sunwest quarry project with local and environmental regulations. The lack of a fencing permit and ECC could potentially lead to legal and environmental repercussions for the company.
 
The letters, both addressed to Governor Rosal, indicate that the governor's office is taking a proactive role in ensuring that all quarrying operations within the province adhere to the necessary legal and environmental standards.
 
Further investigations are expected to determine the implications of these findings and to ensure that Sunwest, Inc. takes appropriate action to rectify the situation. The local community and environmental groups are closely monitoring the developments, emphasizing the importance of responsible and compliant quarrying operations in the region.
