REP. LAGMAN GRILLS COMELEC ON AKAP FUND RELEASE AMIDST ELECTION BAN
QUEZON CITY – During budget deliberations in the House of Representatives, Albay 1st District Representative Krisel Lagman questioned the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) regarding the release of Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AKAP) funds during the election period, when public funds are typically restricted.
"During the budget deliberation, I asked COMELEC a simple question: why was the release of AKAP funds allowed in the middle of the election ban on public funds?" Rep. Lagman stated on her facebook post.
According to Rep. Lagman, COMELEC officials failed to provide a direct answer to her query. "Sadly, they couldn't answer directly. The sponsor explained that there were restrictions, such as politicians or their staff not being allowed in the payouts and a ban 10 days before elections. But that was not my question," she explained.
Rep. Lagman emphasized the widespread perception that AKAP funds were used for political campaigning. "Everyone knows that AKAP was used for campaigning," she asserted. "I remind COMELEC that the authority to allow the use of public funds for social services is in their hands. They have the power and responsibility to ensure that public funds are not used for politicking. I hope this does not happen again in future elections."
Rep. Lagman concluded by underscoring the need for greater vigilance in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process. "It is time to take the monitoring of the integrity of our elections seriously," she stated.
