RETIRED JUDGE CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF POLITICIANS' FACES ON RELIEF TARPAULINS IN MASBATE
Masbate, Philippines – Law Professor and Retired Judge Igmedio Camposano has issued a strong call for the immediate removal of politicians' faces from tarpaulins and streamers used in relief and rehabilitation efforts in areas of Masbate recently devastated by Typhoon Opong.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Camposano emphasized that providing aid is part of the politicians' duty, as they are paid with taxpayers' money, which also funds the distributed assistance. He urged them to focus on serving the people rather than engaging in self-promotion ("pagpa EPAL").
Parte ini san inda obligasyon kay nagasweldo sinda hali sa buwis san pumoluyo kag amo man an ayuda nga inda guina distribute. Oras ini san pagserbi dili pagpa EPAL. Please act on this FORTHWITH otherwise basi EKISAN an iyo mga pamayhon san katawohan sa kabadli o kaya maisip ninda nga kamo an kawsa san inda kamunduan kag kasakitan kay pirme niyo guinasabi saiyo mga trapal..THRU THE EFFORTS OF..... Klaro po ba? Pasensya na po kun tinamaan kamo. Amo gayud ini an an katuyuan sani nga mensahe ko."
[Translation: "A call to officials: Can you please remove/cover the faces of politicians on tarpaulins/streamers and posters while conducting relief and rehabilitation efforts for those affected by Typhoon Opong? This is part of your obligation because you are paid with the people's taxes, which also fund the aid you distribute. This is a time to serve, not to promote yourselves. Please act on this FORTHWITH, otherwise, people might cross out your faces in anger or think that you are the cause of their sadness and suffering because you always say on your tarpaulins...THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF..... Is that clear? I apologize if you feel alluded to. That is indeed the purpose of this message."]
The retired judge urged those in authority to act swiftly, suggesting that failure to do so could result in public disapproval or the perception that these politicians are the cause of the people's suffering, given their constant self-promotion on aid materials.
The statement has resonated with many residents of Masbate, who have shared similar sentiments about the politicization of disaster relief efforts.
