TDC BICOL CHAPTER MARCHES AGAINST CORRUPTION, DECRIES NEGLECT OF TEACHERS' NEEDS

LEGAZPI CITY, ALBAY – The Teachers' Dignity Coalition (TDC) Bicol Chapter made a strong statement against corruption and government neglect of educators' needs today, September 21, 2025, as they joined the "Lakaw Kontra Kurapsyon" (Walk Against Corruption).

The Albay Movement Against Corruption (AMAC) organized today's "Lakaw Kontra Kurapsyon," drawing support from various sectors, including the Teachers' Dignity Coalition (TDC) Bicol Chapter. The TDC contingent, headed by Arnel Adtoon, Vice Chairman for South Luzon and Designated Spokesperson of TDC Bicol, joined a larger assembly of citizens to amplify the call for transparency and accountability in public service.

Teachers from the Schools Division of Albay, Schools Division of Legazpi City, and educators from Masbate bolstered the TDC's presence at the march. Retired Judge Igmedio Camposano, a law professor in Masbate Province, joined teachers in their protest march against corruption. Camposano stated that his participation was a way to demonstrate his love for the country. "If others have sacrificed their lives," he said, "can't we even march and shout in the streets?"

The former judge marched alongside members of the Teachers' Dignity Coalition and other concerned citizens, adding his voice to the growing calls for transparency and accountability in government. His presence underscored the diverse support for the anti-corruption movement.

TDC Bicol Spokesperson, in a passionate address, articulated the TDC Bicol Chapter's frustration with the government's apparent disregard for the welfare of teachers. "We stand here united to condemn corruption and to demand that the government prioritize the needs of its educators," Adtoon declared. "It is unconscionable that billions are allocated to dubious projects, such as ghost and substandard flood control measures, while the essential needs of teachers remain unmet."

The TDC Bicol Chapter highlighted several key areas of concern:

- Long-Overdue Salary Increase: Teachers have consistently advocated for a just and equitable salary increase that recognizes their crucial role in shaping the nation's future and addresses the increasing cost of living.

- Critical Classroom Shortages: Many schools across the region continue to struggle with a severe lack of classrooms, creating overcrowded learning environments that hinder effective instruction.

- Unfulfilled PBB Promises: The Performance-Based Bonus (PBB) for 2023, intended to incentivize and reward teacher performance, remains unfunded, leading to widespread disappointment and a sense of being undervalued.

- Stalled Aral Program Implementation: The Department of Education's Aral Program, designed to mitigate learning losses, faces significant hurdles due to insufficient funding, casting doubt on its potential impact.

- Unresolved Laptop Scandal: The controversial procurement of overpriced and substandard laptops continues to be a symbol of corruption and mismanagement, eroding public trust in government institutions.

"Our teachers are dedicated professionals who are committed to providing quality education to our students, often under challenging circumstances," Adtoon emphasized. "It is time for the government to recognize their contributions and invest in their well-being."

The TDC Bicol Chapter's participation in the "Lakaw Kontra Kurapsyon" serves as a powerful reminder of the need for greater transparency and accountability in government spending. The organization pledged to continue advocating for the rights and welfare of teachers and to hold those in power responsible for ensuring that education is prioritized.
