Congresswoman Lagman Assesses Typhoon Damage in Santo Domingo Schools, Calls for Prioritization of Education Infrastructure
During her inspection, Congresswoman Lagman found that Buhatan Elementary School requires repairs to three classrooms, while Alimsog Integrated School needs major repairs to four classrooms. The damages included structural issues, roof damage, and water damage, rendering the classrooms unsafe for students and teachers.
In response to the devastation, Congresswoman Lagman emphasized the need to prioritize education infrastructure. She noted that if the billions of pesos allocated to flood control projects had been used for the construction of classrooms, students would have directly benefited. "Kung dito lang sana napunta ang billions of pesos na ginastos para sa maanomalyang flood control projects sana ay mapapakinabangan ito ng mga mag-aaral pati ng mga susunod na henerasyon," she stated. "Investing in our schools is investing in the future of our children." She added.
Lagman pledged to work with local officials and the Department of Education to secure funding and resources for the immediate repair of the damaged classrooms. She stressed the importance of ensuring that students have access to safe and conducive learning environments, especially in the aftermath of natural disasters. Her office will explore various funding options and collaborate with contractors to expedite the repair process.
Congresswoman Lagman's visit underscored the urgent need for a shift in priorities towards education infrastructure. By reallocating funds and investing in the construction and repair of classrooms, the government can better serve the needs of students and ensure they have the resources they need to succeed.
