Congresswoman Lagman Calls for Cultivating Critical Thinking Among Children

Quezon City, Philippines – During National Children’s Month, Representative Krisel Lagman delivered a privilege speech emphasizing the importance of cultivating critical thinking among children to foster participatory democracy and national prosperity. Lagman argued that these goals are often relegated to adults, overlooking children's potential contributions.

Lagman highlighted the "Longitudinal Cohort Study on the Filipino Child," which reveals concerning statistics about Filipino adolescents, including high rates of being out of school and off-track with schooling. The study underscores that poor school performance and adolescent pregnancy diminish human capital formation, limiting future productivity and responsible decision-making.

Drawing from Article XIV, Section 3 (2) of the Constitution, Lagman reminded her colleagues of the mandate to encourage critical and creative thinking in educational institutions. She emphasized that critical thinking begins even before formal schooling, emerging from simple curiosity and open conversations at home.

Lagman cited her niece's insightful response to a question about banning smoking in public places as evidence of children's capacity for critical thinking. She posed thought-provoking questions about children's potential to make informed choices on health, civic engagement, and global issues when equipped with proper information and awareness. Lagman urged legislators to act with dispatch, guided by empirical research, to ensure that disturbing realities do not become comfortable norms. She concluded with a call to commit to building a nation where children can have a better life, echoing the words of the late Senator Jose W. Diokno.
