SLTCFI Students to AKO Bicol: "You Started This, Now Fix It!"
Legazpi City – Students at Southern Luzon Technological Colleges Foundation, Inc. (SLTCFI) are reeling after a sudden announcement on Monday morning that their scholarships have been revoked due to alleged government issues. The affected students, enrolled in Diploma in Hotel and Tourism Management (DTHT) and Diploma in Computer Programming and Systems Technology (DCPST) courses, attended a mandatory meeting where they were informed of the scholarship termination, leaving many in tears and facing an uncertain future.
According to Rhianne Jane, an SLTCFI student who shared her experience on social media, the announcement came as a shock. Students who had diligently met all requirements and followed the rules now find themselves without the financial support they had relied upon. The school presented four options: continue the 3-year diploma course with a ₱27,000 tuition fee, shift to a 4-year course with only a 15% discount, wait for the next batch of scholarships with no guarantee of availability, or drop out altogether.
The sudden loss of scholarships has triggered widespread disappointment and concern among the student body. Many students, who come from families with limited financial resources, are now contemplating dropping out of school, a decision that underscores the severe impact of the scholarship cancellation. "Almost half of the students are now deciding to drop out because of what happened. That is heartbreaking," Rhianne Jane lamented in her post.
Students are now calling for accountability and a fair resolution to the situation. They are urging SLTCFI to secure scholarship funding before admitting students into such programs and appealing to AKO Bicol Partylist to intervene and help rectify the situation, as the scholarship program was reportedly their initiative. "We respectfully call on you to help fix this scholarship program. It was your initiative, and we believe in your commitment to education. Please stand with us and ensure that students are not left behind," Rhianne Jane appealed. The students emphasize that this is not about tarnishing the school's reputation but about ensuring that their voices are heard and that they are not penalized for issues beyond their control. They are determined to fight for their future and are seeking support to make education accessible and affordable.
