Truck Driver's License Suspended for 90 Days Following Fatal Camalig Road Crash
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has suspended the license of the truck driver involved in the tragic road crash on Maharlika Highway in Camalig, Albay, for 90 days. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, resulted in the deaths of eleven individuals and injuries to three others.
The suspension comes in response to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to hold accountable those found negligent in their driving, particularly when such negligence leads to the loss of life. Initial reports indicate that the truck, driven by Recson Zamora, experienced brake failure, causing it to collide with a UV Express van operated by the Bicol Intercity Transport Cooperative (BITCoop) on a downhill section of the road.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez expressed his condolences to the bereaved families of the victims. "We at the DOTr extend our deepest sympathies to the families of those who perished. There is no greater pain than losing a loved one. I assure the families of the victims that we will hold those responsible for this road crash accountable," Secretary Lopez stated.
According to the LTO, the driver may face charges of reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle improperly. The truck owner may also face violations due to the alleged faulty brakes. The LTO has placed the truck with plate number RFK-576, registered to Miguel Cerdeno, under alert status. Meanwhile, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is focused on ensuring that financial assistance from the insurance provider is promptly provided to the victims. The LTFRB has also issued a 30-day preventive suspension to the BITCoop franchise due to observed violations by the van operator.
