Rañola Contradicts Garbin: 500-Peso Noche Buena Pack 'Kulang Na Kulang'
 
Legazpi City, Albay – Councilor Alan Rañola has opposed the statement of Ako Bicol Representative Alfredo Garbin Jr. that a 500-peso noche buena pack is sufficient for families this holiday season.
 
The disagreement emerged during an interview with DWIZ South Luzon, where Rañola cited the high prices of key noche buena items as the main reason for his stance. He pointed specifically to ham and cheese – staples of the traditional Filipino Christmas feast – noting that their current costs make the 500-peso budget inadequate. Rañola added that while a 1,000-peso pack might be enough, the 500-peso amount falls far short of meeting families’ needs.
 
“Kulang na kulang ang 500 para sa noche buena dahil sa mataas na presyo ng hamon at keso,” Rañola said in the interview. “Ayun pa sa kanya maaring 1000 pesos ay sumapat pero hindi ang 500 pesos.”
 
The debate highlights growing concerns over the impact of rising food prices on Filipino households as Christmas approaches. Noche buena is a cherished tradition in the Philippines, where families gather on Christmas Eve to share a special meal, making the affordability of essential items a pressing issue for many.
 
Local residents in Albay have echoed Rañola’s sentiments in informal conversations, with many noting that even basic ingredients for the feast have become more expensive in recent months. The exchange between the councilor and the representative also reflects broader discussions on government support for families during the holiday season, as communities grapple with cost-of-living challenges.

Rañola was Garbin Jr.'s running mate in the 2022 election when Rañola ran for vice mayor in Legazpi and Garbin Jr. for mayor.
