LIGAO CITY LEADS THE WAY WITH NEW SANITARY LANDFILL AND WASTE-TO-ENERGY PLANS

LIGAO CITY, Albay – Ligao City is pioneering sustainable waste management solutions with the recent inauguration of its state-of-the-art sanitary landfill and ambitious plans for a waste-to-energy initiative. The new landfill, located in the 1st ward of the 3rd district, replaces the city's former open dumpsite, marking a significant step forward in environmental responsibility.

Spearheaded by Mayor Itay Nando Gonzales and the Sangguniang Panlungsod, the project reflects the city's commitment to addressing its growing waste challenges. Vice Mayor Jaypee David revealed that the construction of the landfill was completed at an efficient cost of Php27 to Php28 million, thanks to in-house administrative work and excavation efforts.

The facility is strategically located on city-owned land, away from residential areas, and incorporates measures to control odors and prevent insect infestations. Its proximity to City Hall, just a 5-minute drive via the Paulog route, ensures accessibility and efficiency.

Looking ahead, Ligao City is exploring advanced Japanese technology for a waste-to-energy project. This innovative plan aims to reduce waste volume by 90%, transforming waste into a valuable energy source.

Community acceptance of the new landfill has been positive, and Ligao City is extending an invitation to neighboring localities to utilize the facility for waste disposal, subject to capacity and environmental considerations. This forward-thinking approach positions Ligao as a leader in sustainable practices and a potential regional partner in building a cleaner, greener future.
